Michael Baker Boathouse

The Michael Baker Boathouse is an award-winning contemporary boathouse for King’s School, Worcester imagined and designed by Associated Architects. Situated in the heart of medieval Worcester with an academic history dating back to the 7th century, the boathouse is a striking, modern design that echoes the shape of a boat and features a cantilevered prow that points towards the River Severn. The unusual sweeping curve of the building required a bespoke rooflight solution that fitted seamlessly into the unique structure.

With a near Passivhaus construction approaching a zero carbon standard, the project involved complex constraints and technical requirements. Our bespoke design solutions team designed a run of linked flat rooflights that curve to the shape of the outer walls whilst also meeting the crucial U-value and air-tightness criteria stipulated. The project was awarded Architect Journal’s Building of the Year 2012 the RIBA West Midlands Award 2013.
