About The Rooflight Co.
Commitment to planet, place and people…it’s in the detail.
We believe business success and ‘doing the right thing’ are not mutually exclusive. Since we were founded in 1993 by Architect, Peter King, we’ve had a commitment to do our best by our people, by our planet and by the places we interact with through our rooflights.
Architectural design influences
We take an architectural approach to rooflight design, we are influenced by nature and natural light. Our methodologies are based around deepening human interaction with both of these for mutual benefit and understanding. Biophilic design, the concept of increasing our connectivity with the natural environment through space and place conditions, is a major influence in our approach.
Our rooflights and roof windows are characterised by their fine detailing and authentic features that combine effortlessly with high performance standards. We’ve been able to maintain our position as the leading manufacturer of premium rooflights for more than three decades due to our diligence of design and commitment to ensuring every small element of detail is fully considered.
In the late 1980s, our founder, architect Peter King RIBA, was practising in London’s Hampstead Garden Suburb. Many of his clients lived in period properties and wanted to extend into their attics, however the challenge was bringing light and ventilation into the space. Modern roof windows and dormers were out of the question due to the local Trust’s strict planning guidelines, leaving the only option, a cast iron single-glazed rooflight based on the Victorian design, which was prone to rusting and leaking.
Peter set about designing a rooflight that incorporated the fine detailing and authentic features of the Victorian model but that met modern performance standards. His original design included a steel frame, double-glazing, draught stripping and a thermal lining, and came in a range of sizes taken from original Victorian patterns.
Called The Conservation Rooflight, planners, conservation officers and fellow architects loved it, appreciating its low-profile, glazing bar and slim sections. More than three decades later, The Original Conservation Rooflight is still the de facto choice for planners and architects to preserve the heritage of historic buildings whilst ensuring they are fit to perform for generations to come.
Proud to be an employee-owned business since 2019
As a values-led organisation our evolution took a natural step in 2019 when we became employee-owned. Our co-owners benefit from a deeper feeling of security and are empowered to have a voice within the business. The EO culture is built on mutual respect and benefit. As a team, we are supportive of each other and committed to delivering excellence in everything we do.
Our values and guiding principles
At The Rooflight Co, every co-owner is part of a unique culture that at its heart has a commitment to be a force for good. To guide us towards this vision we live by three guiding principles that help inform all our decision-making and activities.
#1 A values-led culture
We have four core values and associated behaviours that guide trustees, co-owners, and directors in their interactions with each other, customers and suppliers. These values inform our decisions, particularly those affecting employees and co-owners. We recognise and celebrate the team for demonstrating these values on a regular basis.
We encourage and empower our team to bring forward new ideas and product or service innovations. Since 1993, we’ve thrived due to our growth mindset and our willingness to continuously develop our people, products and processes.
#3 Long Term Sustainability
When it comes to growth and the environment we choose to do things the right way.
We consider ourselves to be custodians of the built environment and take our responsibility in mitigating climate change seriously.
To help us achieve this, we have committed to an internal initiative to become carbon neutral.
We are PlanetMark certified, which helps us to understand and measure our carbon footprint in order to accelerate our net zero journey.
We also hold BCorp status, a designation that we meet high standards of verified performance, accountability and transparency on factors from employee benefits and charitable giving to supply chain practices and input materials.
We hold ourselves to the highest standards and as such undergo rigorous measurement and inquiry from external organisations.
As an organisation we are committed to doing things ‘the right way’. That means actively seeking out and working towards external industry and manufacturing standards.
Our products are tested and certified through a range of industry bodies to ensure they meet the required standards. The range of bodies we work with includes:
